dc.description Abstract en_US
dc.description.abstract My ambition to write this theme as part of 11th International postgraduate training course under UNESCO in Czechoslovakia was the result of my research work which I wrote in the same university. My research work as part of my first higher academic stage was honoured excellent by the board of final national examination in Czechoslovakia. So, because of that I was more motivated to write the UNESCO work based on the situation in pig husbandry in East Africa. Because I visited home Aug. - Oct. 1988 United Republic of Tanzania and our big neighbour Kenya. I was been able to see by myself how the big number of pigs were been disposed by fire or dung into big graves/holes after been condemned or died because of the higher infection of pneumonia. Some farm s in Arusha and Kilimanjaro in United Republic of Tanzania were put under quarantine. Also, some cases of higher infection were been reported from Kenya and Uganda. As I tried to speculate the reasons behind, I found out that it was been caused by: i) Poor nutrition, which was been caused by lack of animal feed, as we know pigs compete with human for food. And this was the result of a big drought which hit East-Africa in year 1986/87. So, because even hunger to animals they tend to defend themselves to diseases which is very fast spread among of poor nutrition or to lose their ability even pneumonia, pig groups in the farms. ii) Totally, the pig farmers forget to do vaccination in their animals especially pigs. Because they consider till today, that "pig farming is just a simple business, just what you have to do is to feed them with anything provided that they eat it". This is a very big practical mistake. The result is, the growth rate will be low or totally unencouraging gain of weight. Because the animals /pigs won’t get all the nutrients and minerals to help them to defend from diseases, promoting growth and for reproduction i. e. boars and sows. iii) Most of the East African pig farmers dot consider the importance of doing medical examination to their pig attenders. Because they do not know that there are some diseases which can be transmitted from human to pig s and vis-versas i. e. enzootic diseases. And by not doing so farm a tenders help to spread the disease not among animals /pig but also to humans. Very few research farms or cooperative farms they do, and they do so because they are reminded by there district medical officers, or others they just know the importance of doing so. For a private farmer they mostly consider it as time and money consumption. But I think they are very wrong. Because if they could do so the year 1987/88 vast pig farmers loses made a lot of farmers to be aware, and so by introducing my new method of eradicating pneumonia in their farm will be welcomed en_US
