Revitalizing Dormant Cooperatives, a Governance Perspective: Case of Tana River County, Kenya

Abstract

the rate of active co-operatives is significantly low (53%) compared to neighboring counties like Garissa (67%) and Marsabit (72%). This study aims to uncover the reasons behind this dormancy, focusing on governance related factors, and suggest intervention strategies to revitalize dormant co-operatives in Tana River County. Through data collected from 20 co-operative officers using focused group discussions and analysed descriptively, the study identified weak governance structures as a major cause of dormancy. To address this issue, appropriate strategies were proposed, including restructuring of formation processes, incorporation of ICT, and innovation in management. Additionally, establishing robust legal frameworks, enhancing technical capacity, and ensuring resource allocation were suggested to counter policy support and capacity challenges. This research contributes to the subtheme of Co-operative Governance and Sustainable Development by providing insights into the role of governance in co-operative sustainability and offering practical strategies for revitalizing dormant co-operatives.
