Abstract:
advised to measure their efforts and contributions to addressing development challenges at both local and
international levels. Once these impacts are assessed, it is crucial for companies to maintain clear
communication with stakeholders. Numerous internationally recognised frameworks offer guidance for
developing a Sustainable Development and Corporate Responsibility Strategy (SDCRS). However, for many
cooperatives with limited experience in this area, initiating or updating an SDCRS can be a challenge, particularly
when resources are constrained. The aim of our research is to propose a practical approach for cooperatives to
establish or update their SDCRS. The study unfolds in three phases. First, we examine how cooperatives are
currently managing their SDCRS by focusing on cooperative members’ perceptions. Primary data is collected
via questionnaires sent to cooperative members. Second, we identify relevant SDCRS frameworks for
cooperatives to use as a reference when developing their strategies. This involves gathering primary data
through interviews with framework experts, as well as secondary data through a review of key SDCRS
frameworks. Third, we deliver a hands-on, step-by-step approach to help cooperative owners, boards, and
corporate responsibility practitioners effectively establish or update their SDCRS. Our findings show that while
cooperative members recognise the importance of SDCRS, many are unaware of their cooperative's capacity
to engage in it. There is also limited knowledge regarding sustainability initiatives within the cooperative. Most
owners would like their cooperatives to make a greater impact in social and environmental areas. We present
key SDCRS frameworks and their characteristics, offering cooperatives guidance on selecting the most suitable
framework for their needs. Finally, we propose a lean, 7-sprint approach to help cooperatives establish their
formal SDCRS, enabling them to align with market and regulatory demands. This approach enhances their
ability to plan, measure, and communicate sustainability and corporate responsibility performance effectively.
